Grandma German's frybread

Start to finish: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup nonfat dry milk solids
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1-1/2 cups warm water
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

Combine dry ingredients in large mixing bowl. Add water and stir with wooden spoon. If your dough is sticky, add flour. You can also chill the dough for an hour in the refrigerator to help it set up.

Shape your dough into discs. Pour vegetable oil into a deep pan or pot -- enough to cover the discs -- and heat on medium-high.

Fry dough in until golden brown on each side. Drain on paper towels. Serve in place of tortillas with tacos or drizzled with honey as a dessert.
